People Incorporated Receives $300,000 To Support Women-Owned Businesses

Normally occurs in June

People Incorporated Financial Services has been awarded $300,000 through the Commonwealth’s Capital for Communities Fund (CCCF) to support and empower women entrepreneurs with accessible financial products and coaching. Funding will also support existing business lending and technical assistance across the agency’s 16 city and county service area. “This funding allows us to expand access to much-needed capital to historically underserved populations, including women-owned businesses and low-income community members,” said People Incorporated Director of Community Economic Development Stephanie Lillard. “Women entrepreneurs continue to face barriers to capital needed to grow or start their businesses, and we hope this funding will help break down walls and support the start-up and expansion of women-owned businesses across the commonwealth.” The Federal Reserve’s 2022 Small Business Credit Survey showed that women-owned businesses frequently encounter barriers to obtaining capital to support and grow their businesses. People Incorporated established People Incorporated Financial Services in 2000 to meet the financing needs of disadvantaged individuals and entrepreneurs in Southwest Virginia and has since expanded to serve the Northern Piedmont, Northern Shenandoah Valley and Greater Prince William regions with its loan products and financial services. People Incorporated is proud to be the only Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) headquartered in Southwest Virginia. People Incorporated Receives $300,000 To Support Women-Owned Businesses

Normally occurs in September

Dangermuffin at The Historic Star Theatre

Oct 12

October 12, 2024 - 7:00 PM 10:00 PM -- Historic Star Theatre. While it may be futile to try to define Dangermuffin’s sound, it is possible to pinpoint the themes that inspire much of the band’s music, and perhaps no theme is as prominent and consistent as nature, including the ocean, the sun, and the mountains...all ancient and powerful and capable of immeasurable and profound healing. These ideas, running like threads through almost every Dangermuffin album, together form the basis of some of the band’s most deeply held principles and teachings: respect the earth, stay open to the universe, and strive for healing. According to lyricist Dan Lotti, if Dangermuffin’s music could accomplish just one thing, it would be to heal. The vocal-centric songs are delivered both via acoustic string band arrangements (think Greensky Bluegrass) and a drum-fueled groovy & fiery jam-influenced arrangement (think Goose), often within the same show! For the band and fans alike, this has led to some of Dangermuffin’s most inspired, exciting, and surprising performances of its career. One Family Productions. October 12, doors: 7pm, music: 8pm Tickets are $20 in adv, $25 at the door. Tickets coming soon.

Rebecca Porter and The Rhinestone Roses at The Historic Star Theatre

Nov 9

November 9, 2024 - 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM - The Historic Start Theatre. A singer-songwriter born in Guam and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia; Rebecca Porter continues to forge her way in country music with songs that balance her distinctive storytelling with the dynamics of her commanding voice in a unique display of soulful classic country. ?A lifelong innate connection to music guided Porter into performing live as a young adult. Through a decade’s worth of live performance with Harrisonburg-Rockingham County area musicians, Porter learned the ropes of life as a performing and recording artist. When her work in cover bands came to a pause after the birth of her first child, Porter found herself stumbling through parenting an infant during a global pandemic. The pandemic and motherhood left Porter yearning for the return to connection and music. Porter transformed her pandemic loneliness into two EPs - “Prime Rainbow Conditions” and 2023’s “Queen of the Local”, the latter of which was successfully crowdfunded based on Porter's formidable regional power. Porter tours extensively around her home state of Virginia, and steadily increasing forays outside the state, commanding stages up and down the East Coast. With completely independent legwork, her EP is making rounds nationally and internationally. One Family Productions. November 9, doors: 7pm, music: 8pm Tickets are 10 in adv, $12 at the door. Tickets coming soon.

College for Older Adults -- Classes and Field Trips Available

May 9 - Jul 15

As we reach the halfway point in our Spring session of College for Older Adults, we reflect on the many great classes we have been fortunate to attend. The Cooking Up Culture class featuring Chef Rod Perrino has cooked up some amazing meals while Andrea Morrison’s class painted beautiful burlap bags to take home. On Tuesdays, Tim Smith has been teaching us all the interesting history of the Greeks and Romans and in the afternoon we have been learning all about the Civil Rights Movement. The hiking class has seen some beautiful scenery as they travel around our area while our Friday fun trips to the Taubman Art Museum and the International Civil Rights Center have been very informative. But the fun hasn’t ended! We have some very fun and interesting classes and trips in the next few weeks. Come and join us for Sustainable Wellness, Living with Black Bears, and Foraging for Wild Edibles. Sign up to go with us on Fridays to SeaQuest in Lynchburg or the D-Day Memorial in Bedford. Call Reynolds Homestead for more information or to sign up.

The Stokes County Arts Council to host Eileen Wilhem at The Apple Gallery

May 16 - Jun 30

The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibit of original art by Eileen Wilhem in the Apple Gallery. A reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 25 from 3:30pm-5:00pm in the Apple Gallery of the Stokes County Arts Council 500 Main Street Danbury, NC. Wilhem shared: “Living on a horse farm in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, I am never at a loss for images and inspiration. Watching how the light changes with the seasons and trying to capture its beauty. My paintings attempt to recreate the mood, whether a drizzly day in France, foggy sunrise on the mountain, the cocky strutting of a rooster or the curiosity of a pig. The grace of people and animals enchants me so that I must pick up my pastels and paint. I mostly paint everyday scenes, which keep me grounded.” Wilhelm has been juried into numerous exhibitions, including: • The Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts, Winston-Salem • 311 Gallery, Raleigh • Red Dog Gallery, Winston-Salem • Hanging Rock Gallery (Solo exhibit) • Apple Gallery (Solo exhibit) • Red Dog Gallery Featured Artist exhibit • The Art Gallery, Greensboro • Ambleside Gallery, Greensboro • Welborn Gallery (Yadkinville Cultural Arts Center) • Captain White’s Gallery (Alamance Arts) • Left Coast Pastel Society 2022 International Show • North Carolina Statewide Exhibition multiple times Wilhelm is a featured local artist at The Arts Place of Stokes, and the Red Dog Gallery. She is a member of Art for Arts Sake, Piedmont Pastel Society (Past President, Member Chair and Treasurer), Pastel Society of NC, Pastel Guild of Europe, Juried in as an Associate member of the Pastel Society of America, and Stokes County Arts Council. She previously served on the boards of Associated Artists and Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA). This exhibit will be on display May 16-June 30, 2024 in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm, Saturday, 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m. and Sunday 12:00pm-6:00pm.
