Reynolds Homestead~ Meet the Artists

Jan 21

2 to 4 pm - Reynolds Homestead Hosts Two Emerging Artists in Exhibition The Reynolds Homestead is pleased to be hosting two new emerging artists in its January-February exhibition. Artist Karen Sigmon of Bassett has 15 oil paintings on display. She has exhibited in the annual JEB Stuart Art Show for the past three years while developing her skills under Henry County art instructor Joyce Wray. Her art has won awards in each show, including two second and one first place. Karen is particularly skilled at painting birds and rural landscape scenes. Reynolds Homestead’s historical services coordinator Beth Almond Ford of Meadows of Dan shows her photography skills in her first full exhibition as well. Using an iPad, Beth captures images of everyday life around her rural home on a farm on the mountain. Her 19 photographs show the beauty of rural life and a real talent for capturing unusual subjects, including her own laundry on the clothesline. The public is invited to attend a Meet the Artists Reception on Sunday, January 21 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Homestead. The artists will be on hand to meet and greet visitors and talk about their work. Refreshments will be available as well. In the event of inclement weather that day, the reception will be held on Sunday, January 28. Supporting local and emerging artists is a strong focus at the Reynolds Homestead, and staff encourage the public to come out and show your support for them as well. The art will be on display through February 23.

Mar 24

11 AM - “Empty Bowls” is an international project to fight hunger, personalized on a community level. “Empty Bowls” allows participants to create and donate bowls, then serve a simple meal. On the day of the event, guests choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. In exchange for the meal, and the bowl, guests contribute a suggested minimum donation. One hundred percent of each meal's proceeds are devoted to local hunger-fighting organizations; in our case, the Patrick County Food Bank.

Stop, Drop and Run 5K ~ Benefitting Stuart Volunteer Fire Deparment

Normally occurs in September

Please join Stuart Fire Department in participating in our 4th Annual Stop, Drop, & Run 5K Run/Walk with Memorial Stair Climb on Saturday, September 9, 2017. Our 4th Annual 5K will take place in beautiful Uptown Stuart starting at Stuart Fire Department’s New Station, formerly the old Food Lion parking lot, at 8:00 A.M. As you may know, Stuart Fire Department’s new station has recently been purchased, and we are eagerly awaiting the start for our many renovations to our new home. All race proceeds will go directly to our building fund and will be used to benefit our new station. Stuart Fire Department members have been working hard on building momentum for our new fire station, and we are hoping to continue this with our run through our beautiful Town. Our memorial stair climb is our unique twist, and is used to honor and remember those that were lost on September 11, 2001. The stair climb will take place in the County Administration Building, running from the first floor up to the third floor across the hall, and back down. The cost of the race is $20 if you register prior to August 25th. Race day registration will be available from 7:00-7:45 A.M. for $25.00. Preregistration packet pickup will be available on Friday, September 8, 2017, at the Town Office, 100 Patrick Avenue, Stuart, Virginia, and the morning of the race. Please visit our Facebook event: Stuart Fire Department’s 4th Annual 5K – Stop, Drop, & Run, to find our registration forms and additional information. Registration forms are available at the Town Office, Chamber of Commerce and online. We are extremely excited to be able to continue this tradition, and are so thankful for the participants and the opportunity to see those in our community that we serve.

Public Meetings to Obtain Update to the West Piedmont Regional Bicycle Plan

Normally occurs in November

The West Piedmont Planning District Commission (WPPDC) is in the process of updating the West Piedmont Regional Bicycle Plan, originally adopted in May 2005. Since the time of this plan’s adoption, some of its recommendations have been achieved, and some bicyclists’ riding preferences have changed. This regional bicycle plan update renews many of the original plan’s route recommendations, but now adds priority routes along major transportation corridors, proposes greater connectivity between existing routes, and displays popular destinations for local resident bicyclists and visiting recreational riders. WPPDC staff want YOUR input for this updated bicycle plan. We will hold a series of public input meetings across the West Piedmont Planning District, as noted below. If you cannot attend and you would like to provide your input, please visit (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BYRN9F5) to take a brief survey. More information on the bike plan is available by visiting www.wppdc.org.
