The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of a “Forsyth Tech Community College Student Art Exhibition” in the Apple Gallery. A meet and greet is scheduled for Friday, October 23, 2026, from 5:30pm-7:00pm at the Stokes County Arts Council, 500 Main Street Danbury, NC.
This exhibit includes original works including sculpture, drawing, paintings, and more. Artists in the exhibit are current students of Forsyth Tech’s associate in fine arts- Visual Art program.
Dr. Cristy Lynn Brown, Program Coordinator of Fine Arts at Forsyth Technical Community College was the coordinator of this collaboration and exhibit and worked closely with our Visual Arts Chair. Professor Jason Lancaster, and AFA students from his Visual Art Portfolio course, matted and framed the work and installed the show.

Autumn Leaves Festival 2026 — Mount Airy, NC -The 60th Annual Autumn Leaves Festival will take place October 9–11, 2026, in Historic Downtown Mount Airy, North Carolina, featuring free admission, live music, arts & crafts, and local food.
Every year in October, Mayberry is the place to be for the Autumn Leaves Festival, an historic festival in the heart of Mount Airy, NC. Shelter #4: Murders over moonshine rocked the town of Fayerdale in the 1920s and 30s, leaving a dying town remembered for tragedy rather than the mining operations that once made it a boom town. Moonshining (illegal whiskey making) was quite prevalent in and around the Fairy Stone State Park area in the early 1900s. Jealousy, greed, and competition often led to feuds, brawls, and even killings. "Moonshine Murders" reveals the events which sparked a number of these murders.
Due to the gruesome nature of this topic, the program is recommended for ages 15 and older.

A telescope will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. We recommend chairs or blankets for stargazing during this event.
Please park at Shelter 3 to prevent light pollution from vehicles. Rangers will be on site to direct you to the Upper Beach Area.

The presentation will be followed by an optional guided hike on our Iron Mine and Upper Stuart's Knob Trails. This trail system is about two miles, and has steep portions, but offers spectacular views of Fairy Stone Lake.

Participants will discover fun facts about salamander behavior, habitat, and adaptations before exploring a 0.25 mile stretch of Hale Creek to try spotting them in the wild.
With guidance, you’ll practice safe and responsible capture techniques and learn how to identify several local species. Whether you’re a seasoned nature-lover or a curious first-timer, this hands-on program offers a memorable chance to meet some of the park’s most secretive residents.
This short creek walk is perfect for families, budding biologists, and anyone who doesn’t mind getting a little muddy. Please remember to wear boots or water shoes. You will also need a headlamp or flashlight.

Runners enjoy a nice run along the paved Mayo River Rail Trail in downtown Stuart before the festival starts. Pre-registered runners are guaranteed a t-shirt. All others are as supplies last. Participants receive a well-marked course along the Mayo River Rail Trail, light refreshments after, awards and door prizes, along with each participant will receive a finishers medal.

Shelter #4: Murders over moonshine rocked the town of Fayerdale in the 1920s and 30s, leaving a dying town remembered for tragedy rather than the mining operations that once made it a boom town. Moonshining (illegal whiskey making) was quite prevalent in and around the Fairy Stone State Park area in the early 1900s. Jealousy, greed, and competition often led to feuds, brawls, and even killings. "Moonshine Murders" reveals the events which sparked a number of these murders.
Due to the gruesome nature of this topic, the program is recommended for ages 15 and older.

Stuart's Knob Trailhead: This trail begins on Iron Mine Trail and features an iron mine once used by Fayerdale residents, as well as an overlook of Fairy Stone Lake. It then transitions into the Upper and Lower Stuart's Knob Trails. Lower Stuart's Knob offers an overlook of Bull Mountain, while Upper Stuart's Knob features steep terrain that rewards hikers with stunning views of Fairy Stone Lake. Fairy Stone State Park will host the Moonshine Hollow Hike. Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult. The 2026 Doe Run Farm Sunflower Maze will run from September 26th to November 1, 2026, in Ararat, VA, with daily hours from 1–7 p.m. Sunday–Friday and 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Saturday.

Fairy Stone State Park will host the Moonshine Hollow Hike. Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult.
