Blue Ridge Parkway Sponsors Rock Castle Gorge History Hike

Jul 20

9 am to 2pm - Looking east over the forested slopes from the Rocky Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the lush green gives no hint to the once thriving Rock Castle community contained within. More than thirty families made their home there before the turn of the 20th century. Historian and retired National Park Ranger, Mike Ryan, author of the book, Life in Rock Castle, Virginia—In Their Own Words, will once again offer the popular hike through Rock Castle Gorge to examine the ruins and tell the stories of those times gone by. Join us for this hike, Saturday, July 20 from 9:30am – 2 pm. Meet at the old Rocky Knob Cabins off of Woodbury Rd near milepost 174. Bring water, your lunch or snacks and wear footgear for stream crossings for this 5 mile, one-way trip. The hike will end at the CCC camp lower trail access off Route 8. Shuttles will be available for drivers, or you may set up your own shuttle, or continue on the trail and hike back to the top. The hike will be repeated in August and September. Call the National Park Service Rocky Knob Visitor Center at (540) 745-9662 for more information.
