The Stokes County Arts Council to host Artist Debbie Culler in the Apple Gallery

Oct 1 - Nov 15

A meet and greet is scheduled for Sunday, October 13 from 2:30pm-4:00pm in the Apple Gallery of the Stokes County Arts Council 500 Main Street Danbury, NC. Debbie Culler is an acrylic, oil, mixed media artist currently residing in southern Virginia. She is a native of Patrick County, Virginia. Around age 11, Culler recalls being bored with watching television. She began picking up her crayons – her first medium – and studying the model’s faces in magazines. Today, most of her artwork reflects her “love for God’s handiwork in nature. He has such incredible colors in His Palette!” Culler has created two book covers and completed a church mural. She has won numerous awards for her art including the “Best in Show” at the 2010 Reynolds Homestead in Critz, Virginia. Culler has a passion for the budding young artists and employs you, if you have such a young artist on your hands, please encourage them all you can! She stresses, “I would not have come this far without the love and encouragement of my mom, Nerina Culler!” This exhibit will be on display through November 15, 2024 in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm, Saturday, 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m. and Sunday 12:00pm-6:00pm. Rebecca Porter and The Rhinestone Roses at The Historic Star Theatre

Nov 9

November 9, 2024 - 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM - The Historic Start Theatre. A singer-songwriter born in Guam and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia; Rebecca Porter continues to forge her way in country music with songs that balance her distinctive storytelling with the dynamics of her commanding voice in a unique display of soulful classic country. ?A lifelong innate connection to music guided Porter into performing live as a young adult. Through a decade’s worth of live performance with Harrisonburg-Rockingham County area musicians, Porter learned the ropes of life as a performing and recording artist. When her work in cover bands came to a pause after the birth of her first child, Porter found herself stumbling through parenting an infant during a global pandemic. The pandemic and motherhood left Porter yearning for the return to connection and music. Porter transformed her pandemic loneliness into two EPs - “Prime Rainbow Conditions” and 2023’s “Queen of the Local”, the latter of which was successfully crowdfunded based on Porter's formidable regional power. Porter tours extensively around her home state of Virginia, and steadily increasing forays outside the state, commanding stages up and down the East Coast. With completely independent legwork, her EP is making rounds nationally and internationally. One Family Productions. November 9, doors: 7pm, music: 8pm Tickets are 10 in adv, $12 at the door. Tickets coming soon.

People Incorporated Receives $300,000 To Support Women-Owned Businesses

Normally occurs in June

People Incorporated Financial Services has been awarded $300,000 through the Commonwealth’s Capital for Communities Fund (CCCF) to support and empower women entrepreneurs with accessible financial products and coaching. Funding will also support existing business lending and technical assistance across the agency’s 16 city and county service area. “This funding allows us to expand access to much-needed capital to historically underserved populations, including women-owned businesses and low-income community members,” said People Incorporated Director of Community Economic Development Stephanie Lillard. “Women entrepreneurs continue to face barriers to capital needed to grow or start their businesses, and we hope this funding will help break down walls and support the start-up and expansion of women-owned businesses across the commonwealth.” The Federal Reserve’s 2022 Small Business Credit Survey showed that women-owned businesses frequently encounter barriers to obtaining capital to support and grow their businesses. People Incorporated established People Incorporated Financial Services in 2000 to meet the financing needs of disadvantaged individuals and entrepreneurs in Southwest Virginia and has since expanded to serve the Northern Piedmont, Northern Shenandoah Valley and Greater Prince William regions with its loan products and financial services.
