Stokes Soup in a Bowl Scheduled for November 23 at Hanging Rock State Park

Nov 23

The 5th annual Stokes Soup in a Bowl is set for Saturday, November 23 at Hanging Rock State Park, where attendees will enjoy homemade soups and desserts, and take home a handcrafted bowl, all while supporting the food ministries of East Stokes Outreach, King Outreach and Northern Stokes Food Pantry. The event will take place rain or shine at the Hanging Rock State Park Historic Bathhouse, 1790 Hanging Rock Park Road in Danbury from 12 noon to 3pm. For $25 per person, attendees will choose their own handcrafted soup bowl, soup (choices include chicken stew, chili, vegetable, tomato, white bean chicken, and more), beverage, and dessert, with all proceeds being divided between the three pantries. Have a bowl from a previous year of Soup in a Bowl? Bring it and get it filled for $15. (beverage and dessert included) Local potters Hal Tenny, Taylor Ellerbee, Chelsea Russell, Phil Jones, Richard Montgomery, Zollie and Renee Smith and others have been busy in the studio hand crafting over 300 bowls for the event. The event is similar to empty bowls projects happening around the country, and comes at a crucial time as area food banks are struggling to keep their shelves stocked. Everyone is encouraged to bring canned food items and help Stokes Arts reach their goal of 2,000 lbs., which will be donated directly to the three Stokes food pantries. In addition to the Stokes County Arts Council, the event is supported by Hanging Rock State Park, Girl Scout Troop #02342, East Stokes Outreach Ministry, King Outreach Ministry, and Northern Stokes Food Pantry. Advanced tickets can be purchased at the Stokes County Arts Council or at each of the outreach ministries and food pantries. Tickets will also be available the day of the event as long as the bowls and soup last. For more information, contact 336 593-8159 or visit StokesArts.org

Class of 2020 Leadership Patrick County

Sep 1 - May 31

NOMINATE SOMEONE OR APPLY YOURSELF - DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 3 The Reynolds Homestead is accepting applications for the 2020 class of Leadership Patrick County. This innovative program is designed to develop the leadership potential of citizens in the county. Participants will learn about county government, education, nonprofits, businesses and tourist attractions in Patrick County and broaden their perspectives on civic leadership and community issues through direct interaction with community leaders and agencies in our area. During September 2019 through May 2020, participants will attend monthly day-long meetings focused on different aspects of the community, including trips to different communities within the county. This year, the AIR Shift curriculum will be incorporated into the program to facilitate the development of community projects the participants will create and implement in the coming year. One evening each month, participants will attend a meeting such as a County Board of Supervisors meeting. The program emphasizes professional development with training in team building, collaboration, consensus building, design thinking, project management, communication, leadership styles. The first meeting is an orientation retreat focused on team building, and identifying leadership styles. In January the participants will enjoy an overnight visit to Richmond to meet with our local delegate and senator and savor a meal with Reynolds family members sponsored by the Richard S. Reynolds foundation. The final meeting will be a commencement ceremony, presentation of community projects, and a celebration. The program seeks a group of 12 men and women from diverse ethnic and professional backgrounds, each possessing strong potential as a future community leader. Applicants must be 21 years old or older to participate. If employed, participants are required to have the permission of their employer to participate. Nominations are being sought, and individuals may choose to nominate themselves. Tuition is $150.00. Chamber of Commerce members receive a $25 discount. Tuition covers all meals, transportation to meetings and accommodations for the overnight stay in Richmond. Because it is important that everyone has an opportunity to apply, a limited number of scholarships are available to those who be unable to attend otherwise. Applications should be delivered to the Reynolds Homestead by Tuesday, September 3, 2019. Applications can be submitted via email to jws@vt.edu. The program is limited to 12 participants, so early applications are encouraged. For more information, contact one of the program coordinators: Julie Walters Steele - phone: 276.694.7181 ext. 23 or email: jws@vt.edu Lisa Martin - phone: 276.694.7181 ext. 22 or email: martinlm@vt.edu Sarah Wray - phone 276.694.7181 ext. 27 or email: wrayse88@vt.edu
