Jealousy, greed, and competition often led to feuds, brawls, and even killings. "Moonshine Murders" reveals the events which sparked a number of these murders. Due to the gruesome nature of this topic, the program is recommended for ages 15 and older.

Sep 27

1:00 PM to 2:00 PM - Shelter #4 - Murders over moonshine rocked the town of Fayerdale in the 1920s and 30s, leaving a dying town remembered for tragedy rather than the mining operations that once made it a boom town. Jealousy, greed, and competition often led to feuds, brawls, and even killings. "Moonshine Murders" reveals the events which sparked a number of these murders. Due to the gruesome nature of this topic, the program is recommended for ages 15 and older.

Normally occurs in September

People Incorporated Financial Services has been awarded $300,000 through the Commonwealth’s Capital for Communities Fund (CCCF) to support and empower women entrepreneurs with accessible financial products and coaching. Funding will also support existing business lending and technical assistance across the agency’s 16 city and county service area. “This funding allows us to expand access to much-needed capital to historically underserved populations, including women-owned businesses and low-income community members,” said People Incorporated Director of Community Economic Development Stephanie Lillard. “Women entrepreneurs continue to face barriers to capital needed to grow or start their businesses, and we hope this funding will help break down walls and support the start-up and expansion of women-owned businesses across the commonwealth.” The Federal Reserve’s 2022 Small Business Credit Survey showed that women-owned businesses frequently encounter barriers to obtaining capital to support and grow their businesses. People Incorporated established People Incorporated Financial Services in 2000 to meet the financing needs of disadvantaged individuals and entrepreneurs in Southwest Virginia and has since expanded to serve the Northern Piedmont, Northern Shenandoah Valley and Greater Prince William regions with its loan products and financial services. People Incorporated is proud to be the only Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) headquartered in Southwest Virginia. The 45th Annual October Festival (Apple Butter Festival)

Oct 11

Our annual October Fest is Saturday, October 11th at 10:00 am... put it on your calendar now so you don't miss it! Sometimes called the applebutter festival, and sometimes called the Woolwine reunion, our October Fest is always filled with good food, great bluegrass music, and ever better friends. This year featuring (in playing order): - Jordan T Morrison & the Foothill Boys - Larry Sigmon & the Virginia Girls - The Friday Night Dance Band Music starts at 10:00 am. The bands switch out roughly every hour at the top of the hour, and play until 4:00 pm. Held in our truck bays again this year everything is close, convenient, and on one level. There will be food (hotdogs, chicken BBQ, deserts, drinks and more), a bake sale, hopefully an item or two auctioned off, and also hopefully applebutter! We'll make as much as we can, but it is first spoken for, so if you would like to reserve yours contact your friendly neighborhood fireman to get on their list. Last year we had plenty for sale the day of the festival, and we have plans to make that much again. We will have folding chairs available, or feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair so you can sit and tap your toes in comfort. Don't worry, if you want to dance we'll leave enough room for you to get up and swing your partner to your hearts content! Bring your chair, bring your significant other, and bring your wallet - hey, this is a fundraiser after all! We sure hope to see you there.

Tom Bishop who many of our market patrons know as “the Birdhouse man” passed away this winter. We are honoring him by installing a birdhouse of his in the garden beds at the market. The Patrick County Master Gardeners will be on site the last Friday of each month with information and to answer gardening questions. Our tool sharpening vendor will be on site the first Friday of every month to sharpen tools. So bring those dull blades and have them sharpened while you shop. The Rise and Shine Youth entrepreneurial vendors will join our vendors on Friday, June 20 and July 18. Come shop from our local youth who set up during those special market days. Our annual Red, White and Blueberries celebration will happen on Friday July 4th. Just the right day to celebrate and shop for your picnic essentials. The First Friday Summer Jam Series returns offering a great concert, food truck and wine for the first Friday of each month May through August. Our holiday tradition of Mistletoe Market will be back for its 17th year. This annual holiday market will be on Saturday, December 6, 10 am to 1 pm. The Stokes County Arts Council to host Sculptor, Painter, and Artist John Gibbs in The Apple Gallery

Aug 16 - Sep 30

The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of “Dimensional Works and Paintings” -- an exhibition of original art by artist, John Gibbs, in the Apple Gallery. A reception is scheduled for Sunday, August 24th from 3:00-4:30pm in the Apple Gallery of the Stokes County Arts Council 500 Main Street Danbury, NC. John Gibbs is an artist based in Greensboro, NC. Trained in sculpture and scientific illustration at the University of Michigan, John has been painting and sculpting professionally since early 2000. A featured artist in New American Paintings, John’s work has sold in galleries in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and North Carolina. While living in Lancaster, PA John was an Artist in Residence at a non-profit teaching foundry. During that time, he produced commissioned works for Millersville University and others while building the foundry and art gallery facilities and exhibiting his artwork in the region. Since moving to Greensboro, John continued painting and sculpting completing public and private commissions while exhibiting in area galleries. His most recent sculpture utilizes cardboard to create stunningly impactful 3D art. His artwork can be seen at johngibbsart.com Artist Statement: “My current work utilizes cardboard as a sculptural medium. This work aims to raise awareness about endangered species and natural beauty, while also reflecting on our broader environmental challenges and elevating the reuse of post-consumer materials with a low carbon footprint. By choosing cardboard as my medium, I not only create a visual impact but also introduce a layer of familiarity that invites viewers to connect on a personal level. Cardboard is often associated with everyday life, packaging, and consumer goods, making it a poignant choice to comment on themes of consumerism and waste. Through my sculptural work, I hope to provoke thoughtful discussions about sustainability and our responsibility toward the planet. It’s a reminder that the choices we make as consumers can have significant consequences for wildlife and the environment. Ultimately, I aspire to inspire others to consider their impact and take action to protect our world.” This exhibit will be on display August 16-September 30, 2025 in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm, Saturday, 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m. and Sunday 12:00pm-6:00pm. People Incorporated Receives $300,000 To Support Women-Owned Businesses

Normally occurs in August
