Kitty Ray Brown and Patty Hall Young Gallery Exhibit Extended

Jan 1 - Feb 15

The Stokes County Arts Council is extending an exhibit of original photography by Kitty Ray Brown and Patty Young in the Apple Gallery until Tuesday, February 15, 2022. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm, Saturday, 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m. and Sunday 1:00pm-6:00pm. For additional information about the exhibit, please contact the Stokes County Arts Council at (336) 593-8159 or visit www.stokesarts.org. Kitty Ray Brown is a local archival photographer and an oil painter. Her exhibit features Impressionist Landscape Paintings, Oils and Archival Photography. Brown worked part-time in the art department while attending school at Pembroke University, which sparked her interest in art and design. After a career in the jewelry industry, designing in precious metals and gemstones and capturing images while writing appraisals, Brown has continued with photography. A move to Stokes County inspired her to expand her photography and offered the opportunity to be mentored by Jesse Moore. More recently Brown has studied Impressionist Landscape painting under Craig Richards. She has painted scenes of Stokes County on rocks from the creek on her property which she sells at Hanging Rock State Park. Brown has won several awards from contests in North Carolina and Virginia and had her flower photographs made into woven tapestries for hotels and resorts around the world. Brown is an active Board member of the Stokes County Art Council, serves as the board secretary, and supports events and exhibitions through photography. Brown also enjoys spending time with her family; she is the mother of 3 and grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Brown manages the Stokes Future Farmers’ Market at Hanging Rock. “I have owned and used a camera since my early teens. I carry it constantly and make pictures every day. Now that I create Impressionist Landscape Paintings, I use my photographs as inspiration,” said Brown. After a long career in the computer industry, Young retired in 2019 and began her second act as a nature photographer. During 2020, she worked tirelessly to improve her skills. Although she had been behind a camera since middle school, she had never spent the hours needed to perfect her technique. She took pictures almost daily during 2020 on her property in Stokes County. As we near the end of 2021, Young is still “focused on nature”. She has continued to work on perfecting her photography skills with each image captured. She has been fortunate to spend countless hours outside in nature and even had the rare opportunity to take images of a new fawn and a young bear on her property. A field covered in red clover and another filled with Sunflowers brought her joy as she spent time capturing the beauty of blooms, birds and butterflies. Her goal for each photograph is to capture not only the beauty but also the emotion of the moment. In addition to photographing nature, Young also captured images throughout 2021 during concerts at The Arts Place and at events throughout Stokes County including Fourth of July fireworks, bike races and hikes at Hanging Rock State Park. Her work is displayed in homes across the United States. Her images have also been published in the local newspaper. Young is an active Board member of the Stokes County Arts Council and currently lives on 53 acres in Stokes County with her husband and Gordon Setter.

Kity Ray Brown and Patty Hall Young's Gallery Exhibit extended until February 15, 2022

Nov 1 - Feb 15

The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the extended exhibit of original photography by Kitty Ray Brown and Patty Young in the Apple Gallery. This exhibit will be on display November 1-February 15, 2022 in the Apple Gallery. This exhibit will be on display November 1-February 15th in the Apple Gallery.

Museum on Main Street Tour 2021-2022: Crossroads: Change in Rural America

Dec 4 - Jan 9

Save the Date: December 4, 2021 to January 9, 2022 - VT/Reynolds Homestead to host "Museum on Main" --Introduction/Welcome to Crossroads: Change in Rural America. Hosted at the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce/Creative Arts Center, 334 Patrick Avenue, Stuart, VA. ? Sliding or flip-up panels explore different aspects of rural ife that experienced great change over the past century. Welcome to rural America, a crossroads of change in a vast land. American Indians who were already here, those who came in search of a better life, and people who were forced to move all contributed to the development of rural America. Throughout the 19th century, the majority of Americans lived in rural areas. They built their lives around the work of harvesting what the land could produce—the food, fuel, fiber, ores, and minerals crucial to a growing nation. They built communities at rural crossroads—small towns that became centers of commerce, politics, and culture. But conditions favorable to robust rural communities changed. Early in the 20th century, growing urban populations shifted economic investment and political influence from the counties to the cities. Since then, the pace of rural change has accelerated. Today, rural communities are at a new crossroads—a meeting point of ideas where they can chart their own future. With their innovations and creative spirit, rural Americans are helping to define and shape the future of the country. Subtitle: Where people meet, ideas interest, and change is constant. ---Credits: Crossroads: Change in Rural America is a Museum on Main Street exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
