Stokes Sessions by Tyler Nail presents: Chance McCoy in Concert

Oct 31

Chance McCoy is a Grammy winning Indie Folk musician, music producer, and film composer from Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Chance grew up in a musical family, as a baby he spent hours strapped to his father's back while his father recorded synth music in the family's home studio. As a young man he took an unlikely musical direction, studying the obscure traditional folk music of Appalachia with old master musicians from West Virginia under a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. After many years steeping himself in the lost traditions of American string band music he went on to win Fiddle, Banjo and Dulcimer championships as well as first place honors in the International String Band contest known as ‘Clifftop’. In 2008 he released ‘Chance McCoy and The Appalachian Stringband’ a collection of traditional music recorded live around one mic that slowly gained a cult following among Old Time Music enthusiasts. He moved to Nashville to join Old Crow Medicine Show in 2012 and toured extensively with OCMS, recording multiple albums with the band before parting ways in 2019 to pursue new musical projects and return to his farm in WV. His first album with Old Crow, where he debuted his talents as songwriter, singer, and instrumentalist, earned the band a Grammy for best folk album in 2014.

Citizen Water Quality Monitors "Free Virtual Trainings" by DRBA"

Nov 4-11

Train and join the dozens of active Citizen Water Quality Monitors (CWQM) who monitor the water quality in the Dan River Basin! Bad water is bad for you, but safe water is key to life — and good for you! In the Dan River Basin, a lot of people get their water from public water supply which comes from one of our rivers in the region. For those people who get their water from private wells, their water is coming from the underground aquifers, which are fed by local waterways and are impacted by what is happening above ground. Citizen Water Quality Monitors are volunteers who test our local streams and rivers to ensure our water stays clean and healthy. DRBA is offering two free virtual trainings to learn how to monitor your local community waterways and help supply data that is used at the state level to determine funding to fix impaired waterways. We will provide all the necessary supplies for the training and future monitoring, plus you'll get a free t-shirt if you become a CWQM! Free Virtual CWQM Trainings! November 4, 2021 - 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. via ZOOM. Registration for this training will be open until October 28, or until the maximum registrations are reached. Space is limited to 20 registrations. Register in advance for the 11/11/21 training. November 11, 2021 - 5:30 – 7:30 PM via ZOOM Registration for this training will be open until November 4, or until the maximum registrations are reached. Space is limited to 20 registrations. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Sponsored by the Dan River Basin Association (drba.nc@danriver.org)

Museum on Main Street Tour 2021-2022: Crossroads: Change in Rural America

Dec 4 - Jan 9

Save the Date: December 4, 2021 to January 9, 2022 - VT/Reynolds Homestead to host "Museum on Main" --Introduction/Welcome to Crossroads: Change in Rural America. Hosted at the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce/Creative Arts Center, 334 Patrick Avenue, Stuart, VA. ? Sliding or flip-up panels explore different aspects of rural ife that experienced great change over the past century. Welcome to rural America, a crossroads of change in a vast land. American Indians who were already here, those who came in search of a better life, and people who were forced to move all contributed to the development of rural America. Throughout the 19th century, the majority of Americans lived in rural areas. They built their lives around the work of harvesting what the land could produce—the food, fuel, fiber, ores, and minerals crucial to a growing nation. They built communities at rural crossroads—small towns that became centers of commerce, politics, and culture. But conditions favorable to robust rural communities changed. Early in the 20th century, growing urban populations shifted economic investment and political influence from the counties to the cities. Since then, the pace of rural change has accelerated. Today, rural communities are at a new crossroads—a meeting point of ideas where they can chart their own future. With their innovations and creative spirit, rural Americans are helping to define and shape the future of the country. Subtitle: Where people meet, ideas interest, and change is constant. ---Credits: Crossroads: Change in Rural America is a Museum on Main Street exhibition developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. Brought to you by the [state humanities council]. Funded by the U.S. Congress. [State] programming is supported by [state partners].

Virginia Tech/Reynolds Homestead to host Rock Spring Art Show

Sep 9 - Oct 29

Art Exhibit on Display at Reynolds Homestead - The name of the show, formerly known as the J.E.B. Stuart Art Show, was updated this year to reflect a deeper connection to the Reynolds Homestead and all who resided on the property, where the art show has been held since 2009 in partnership with Bull Mountain Artists. The Reynolds Homestead, once known as Rock Spring Plantation, was the home of the Hardin Reynolds family and numerous enslaved men, women and children. The property’s rock spring once provided the water essential to everyone who lived on or visited the property. The show’s opening reception and awards ceremony will be held Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Reynolds Homestead. Art will be exhibited through Oct. 29. For more information about the Rock Spring Art Show and to register artwork for submission, please visit reynoldshomestead.vt.edu. If you are an individual with a disability and desire an accommodation, contact Lisa Martin at martinlm@vt.edu during regular business hours at least 10 business days prior to the event.
