People Incorporated Financial Services has been awarded $300,000 through the Commonwealth’s Capital for Communities Fund (CCCF) to support and empower women entrepreneurs with accessible financial products and coaching. Funding will also support existing business lending and technical assistance across the agency’s 16 city and county service area. “This funding allows us to expand access to much-needed capital to historically underserved populations, including women-owned businesses and low-income community members,” said People Incorporated Director of Community Economic Development Stephanie Lillard. “Women entrepreneurs continue to face barriers to capital needed to grow or start their businesses, and we hope this funding will help break down walls and support the start-up and expansion of women-owned businesses across the commonwealth.” The Federal Reserve’s 2022 Small Business Credit Survey showed that women-owned businesses frequently encounter barriers to obtaining capital to support and grow their businesses. People Incorporated established People Incorporated Financial Services in 2000 to meet the financing needs of disadvantaged individuals and entrepreneurs in Southwest Virginia and has since expanded to serve the Northern Piedmont, Northern Shenandoah Valley and Greater Prince William regions with its loan products and financial services. People Incorporated is proud to be the only Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) headquartered in Southwest Virginia. Visit our website to learn more about our business loans and financial services or give us a call at 276-619-2297!

The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibit of original paintings by artist Kenneth Laird in the Apple Gallery. A meet and greet is scheduled for Saturday, May 24 from 4:30pm-6:00pm in the Apple Gallery of the Stokes County Arts Council, 500 Main Street Danbury, NC.
By merging traditional painting techniques with digital tools, Laird creates giclée printed and traditional abstract works that offer unique depth and textures. “The physicality of pallet knife work and the layering of paint are juxtaposed with the precision and versatility of digital photographic manipulation, resulting in pieces that are rich in both tradition and innovation,” he explained. This combination not only allows for greater freedom in experimentation, but it also opens new possibilities for how nature can be represented, interpreted, and experienced in contemporary art. In his works, he combines mixed media, including dust powders of gold and silver, along with burnishing, raw, and distressed wood and other materials. He then uses
Photoshop to merge the traditional media photographed with digitally manipulated content to create his imagery.
This exhibit will be on display May 16-June 30, 2025 in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm, Saturday, 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m. and Sunday 12:00pm-6:00pm. SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, May 31st and Sunday, June 1st. Following the enthusiastic community reception of Pride and Prejudice: A Musical Comedy
at the Star Theatre earlier this year, Virginia Tech’s Reynolds Homestead announces plans to host Tara Raczinski’s newest Austen adaptation in downtown Stuart on May 31 and June 1, with support from Clark Gas & Oil.
In this enchanting new theatrical interpretation of Persuasion, audiences will follow the poignant story of Anne Elliot, who, years earlier, was persuaded to break off an engagement with the love of her life, Frederick Wentworth, a dashing but penniless naval officer. Now, eight years later, Anne finds herself navigating the tides of regret, duty, and rediscovered affection when Captain Wentworth reenters her life—richer, more confident, and seemingly indifferent to the woman who once broke his heart.
Infused with the spirit of the sea, the performance features live renditions of both traditional and original maritime songs performed by the band
Banna. The production is written by Tara Raczenski, with original songs and arrangements by Evan Wang and Banna, and is directed by Phillip Powell. The two-act show runs approximately 90 minutes, including a brief intermission, and invites audiences to experience Austen’s enduring themes of resilience, hope, and lost love.
For more than 50 years, the Reynolds Homestead has been providing arts and culture programs to residents of Patrick County and surrounding counties. “After the Pride and Prejudice: A Musical Comedy performance at the Star in January sold out, we knew we should bring additional musicals to the Star Theater,” said Reynolds Homestead director Julie Walters Steele. “We were thrilled that Clark Gas and Oil, who so generously sponsored the January show, agreed to sponsor a second musical.”
Persuaded: A Play with Music continues the Reynolds Homestead’s commitment to bringing high-quality, engaging arts experiences to the community, while celebrating the enduring legacy of classic literature. With its blend of heartfelt storytelling, dynamic performances, and live music, this production promises to delight longtime Austen fans and newcomers alike. Get tickets now for this special cultural event in the heart of downtown Stuart, as the Star Theatre once again comes alive with the magic of live performance.
Two shows will be offered over the weekend. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show on Saturday, May 31 and at 2:00 p.m. for the 2:30 p.m. show on Sunday, June 1. Admission is $20 for adults and $15 for youth 16 and younger. Tickets at the door will be $25 for adults and $18 for youth. Tickets can be purchased online at bit.ly/rhpersuaded or by visiting the Reynolds Homestead website.
The Reynolds Homestead also acknowledges Lowell’s Hollow for their support in providing lodging for the cast and crew.
If you are an individual with a disability and desire accommodations, please contact Kristin Hylton by email at krhylton@vt.edu or phone (276-694- 7181 ext. 26) at least five business days prior to the event.
