The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of a Fiber Arts Exhibit by Artist Janeise Harmon, in the Apple Gallery.
“Homage: A Celebration of American Coverlet Patterns and of the Women Who Wove Them” by Janeise Harmon.
Janeise Harmon, of Stuart, VA, received her Professional Crafts: Fiber AAS from
Haywood Community College (Clyde, NC) in 2024. She serves as the Program Director for the Gypsy Hollingsworth Fiber Arts Program, a division of Stokes County Arts Council in Danbury, NC. Janeise teaches introductory fiber arts classes in Stokes County and demonstrates her craft at
seasonal events. She is a member of the Homestead Weavers Exchange in Critz, VA and has exhibited artworks regionally in Stuart, Martinsville, and Roanoke.
Janeise shared, as her artist statement, “I am a handweaver living in Southwest Virginia making artworks that celebrate the material culture of Appalachia. The historical overshot patterns handwoven by this region’s foremothers are the inspiration for my work. Ever the enthusiast for bold design, I am particularly taken with the sweeping curves and geometric patterns that this weave structure is known for. In presenting these graphic designs as art, I seek to start
conversations and share stories about these remarkable homestead weavers and the processes they undertook to create warmth and beauty on their isolated homesteads.”
This exhibit will be on display through June 30, 2026, in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, Saturday, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, and Sunday 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm. The Patrick County Library and Bookmobile will hold a summer reading program for seven weeks. This year we will use Beanstack, our online reading teacher, along with a new program called Splash and Read. Participants need to attend four out of seven programs. Program begins June 1st and runs until July 28th. Punch cards will be used to keep up with the reading requirements. Once the child finishes the punch card, both the child and their parent will get a free pass to the pool. Splash and Read will be sponsored by the Town of Stuart, Stuart Rotary Club, Stuart Ruritan Club and One Family Production.

Murders over moonshine rocked the town of Fayerdale in the 1920s and 30s, leaving a dying town remembered for tragedy rather than the mining operations that once made it a boom town. Moonshining (illegal whiskey making) was quite prevalent in and around the Fairy Stone State Park area in the early 1900s. Jealousy, greed, and competition often led to feuds, brawls, and even killings. "Moonshine Murders" reveals the events which sparked a number of these murders.
Due to the gruesome nature of this topic, the program is recommended for ages 15 and older.

Beach Breezeway: Ready to hit the water with confidence? Join us at Fairy Stone State Park for a fun, hands-on Paddle Safety Class designed for both beginners and casual paddlers looking to sharpen their skills. In this engaging session, DRBA (Dan River Basin Association) instructors will guide you through the essentials of safe and enjoyable paddling. You'll go over paddle essentials, reading the water, trip planning, and safety. You get to do all of this while also enjoying the beauty of Fairy Stone. Come prepared to get a little wet, have a lot of fun, and leave ready for your next adventure! Classes will be limited to 10 boats. Boats, paddles and PFDs are available on location, but you can bring your own. June 26th is National Canoe & Kayak Day!
Paddle under the darkening sky to visit the ghosts that haunt the lost town of Fayerdale. Hear the tales of the spirits of the moonshiners that called this area home.
This cost is $15 per canoe rental or $5 to bring your own boat. Life jackets are required at all times. Registration is required and must be made in person at the park office on the day of the event.
This program is suitable for ages 5 and up. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Boats leave at start time. Participants must arrive 15 minutes early to board canoes. Maximum participation: 12 boats (3-4 per canoe depending on size of individuals).

This ranger-led program explores the missing town and its rowdy residents. Discover how moonshining put the boom in "boom town"!
The presentation will be followed by an optional guided hike on our Iron Mine and Upper Stuart's Knob Trails. This trail system is about two miles, and has steep portions, but offers spectacular views of Fairy Stone Lake.

Reynolds Homestead will host a VA250 event Tuesday June 30, 2026, at 7pm to share stories about the military service of men connected to the site including: Richard Joshua Cox carried a Peruvian coin he credited with preserving his life during the French and Indian and Revolutionary wars How at age 17 A.D. Reynolds, became a Major in the Confederate Army. Squire Cobb, the enslaved valet who remained by his side despite opportunities to escape to freedom. The tragedy of Miles & Jacob Reynolds, who when freed, joined the US Army, but died soon afterwards during a measles epidemic.

Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult. Celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary with a relaxing paddle on Fairy Stone Lake. Canoes and personal flotation devices will be provided. Please bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen; wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty and/or wet.
The program cost is $15 per canoe rental or $5 to bring your own boat.
Registration is required and must be made in person at the park office prior to the event.
The paddle trip is for ages 4 and up; children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
Boats leave at start time. Participants must arrive 15 minutes early to board canoes.
Maximum participation: 12 boats (3-4 per canoe depending on size of individuals).

Mabry Mill is the most photographed spot on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The old mill, cultural demonstrations, and tradition of Sunday afternoon music have drawn visitors to the location for decades. Milepost Music concerts are held the first and third Sunday of each month, June through September, outdoors near the sorghum shed.

Through this program, students will get hands-on, immersive learning of design thinking, 3D printing, augmented reality and social entrepreneurship.

Join us at Fairy Stone State Park for a fun, hands-on Paddle Safety Class designed for both beginners and casual paddlers looking to sharpen their skills. In this engaging session, DRBA (Dan River Basin Association) instructors will guide you through the essentials of safe and enjoyable paddling. You'll go over paddle essentials, reading the water, trip planning, and safety. You get to do all of this while also enjoying the beauty of Fairy Stone. Come prepared to get a little wet, have a lot of fun, and leave ready for your next adventure! Classes will be limited to 10 boats. Boats, paddles and PFDs are available on location, but you can bring your own. Kim Buchanan is an award-winning songwriter who performed throughout the east coast between 1998 and 2004. She created an intimacy with her audiences through her lyrics and the emotion she conveyed with her powerful, yet soulful, vocal abilities. Buchanan’s sincerity about the music embraced the listener. Whether performing in the intimate setting of a house concert, or to a full house on the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, audiences received a magical performance.
Nikki Forgione is an accomplished guitar player and vocalist. Since singing the National Anthem in front of an audience at the age of three, Nikki has taken hold of the reins and not looked back. She has won two area karaoke contests at the ages of nine and ten. She even participated in the NYC music festival singing at venues such as Madison Square Garden and the Hard Rock Cafe in Manhattan.

Fairy Stone State Park will host the Moonshine Hollow Hike. Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult. The Slate Mountain Ramblers is a family old-time band from Mount Airy, N.C. They formerly lived in Ararat, Va, a small community at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. For many years, Richard Bowman, his wife, Barbara, and their daughter Marsha, have spent weekends playing music. Richard plays fiddle, Barbara the bass and Marsha plays claw-hammer banjo.
The Slate Mountain Ramblers play for shows, dances, family and community gatherings, benefits, and compete at fiddlers’ conventions throughout the year. They have played internationally at the Austrian Alps Performing Arts Festival and in England.

Mabry Mill is the most photographed spot on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The old mill, cultural demonstrations, and tradition of Sunday afternoon music have drawn visitors to the location for decades. Milepost Music concerts are held the first and third Sunday of each month, June through September, outdoors near the sorghum shed.

Fairy Stone State Park will host the Moonshine Hollow Hike. Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult. Fairy Stone State Park will host the Moonshine Hollow Hike. Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult. Fairy Stone State Park will host the Moonshine Hollow Hike. Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult. The group was founded in 1985 by Cecelia Cassady and Johanna Britt. Since that time, the group has grown from informal sessions where members worked on personal projects to organized meetings with programs and workshops led by weavers of regional and national reputation. The group meets bi-monthly at the Community Engagement Center at Reynolds Homestead in Critz, Virginia.
The Lynwood Artists Gallery is curated by Lynwood Artists, an organization for practicing artists in the Martinsville-Henry County area. Its members share a desire to stimulate understanding and enjoyment of fine art and the artistic process, while providing area artists with opportunities to exhibit and further develop their talents.

The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of a Fiber Arts Exhibit by
Artist, Janeise Harmon, in the Apple Gallery. A reception is scheduled for Sunday, May 31, 2026
from 3:00-4:30pm at the Stokes County Arts Council 500 Main Street Danbury, NC.
Janeise Harmon, of Stuart, VA, received her Professional Crafts: Fiber AAS from
Haywood Community College (Clyde, NC) in 2024. She serves as the Program Director for the
Gypsy Hollingsworth Fiber Arts Program, a division of Stokes County Arts Council in Danbury,
NC. Janeise teaches introductory fiber arts classes in Stokes County and demonstrates her craft at
seasonal events. She is a member of the Homestead Weavers Exchange in Critz, VA and has
exhibited artworks regionally in Stuart, Martinsville and Roanoke.
Janeise shared, as her artist statement, “I am a handweaver living in Southwest Virginia making
artworks that celebrate the material culture of Appalachia. The historical overshot patterns
handwoven by this region's foremothers are the inspiration for my work. Ever the enthusiast for
bold design, I am particularly taken with the sweeping curves and geometric patterns that this
weave structure is known for. In presenting these graphic designs as art, I seek to start
conversations and share stories about these remarkable homestead weavers and the processes
they undertook to create warmth and beauty on their isolated homesteads.”
This exhibit will be on display through June 30, 2026 in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County

Starting with the first Sunday in May (May 3), pizzas are back at the Villa! Pizzas are Sundays only and, as a reminder, we’re open 12-4:30 on Sundays. Pizza Sundays are always weather permitting, so check our socials or give us a call if the forecast is shaky (our regular food menu will be available regardless). Pizza Sundays traditionally run thru October or as the weather allows.

Fairy Stone State Park Monday Market will be opening on Memorial Day, May 25th, 2026, and runs through Labor Day, September 7th, 2026. Time: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Shelters 3 & 4 at Fairy Stone State Park 967 Fairystone Lake Drive.
We have approximately 20 vendors registered and Joe Hylton's BBQ Food Truck will be on site.
We do have live music planned for each Monday. Our music schedule is listed below. There is a nice shady grassy area for the music. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy a great time.

The Ararat Ruritan Club hosts BINGO night on the third Saturday of each month. Doors open at 5pm, and games begin at 6pm. Concessions are available. Fairy Stone State Park will host the Moonshine Hollow Hike. Walk in the footsteps of moonshiners of decades gone by. Visit the remains of two old moonshine stills and learn about the very interesting, and sometimes tragic, history of our local moonshining activities -- Fridays, 10 a.m. at the Fairy Stone State Park Visitor Center. Guests will meet an interpreter at the Visitor Center then drive to the hike location. This hike is over steep, uneven terrain and is difficult.
