The Stokes County Arts Council is proud to host Artist Janeise Harmon in The Apple Gallery

Jun 1-30

The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of a Fiber Arts Exhibit by Artist Janeise Harmon, in the Apple Gallery. “Homage: A Celebration of American Coverlet Patterns and of the Women Who Wove Them” by Janeise Harmon. Janeise Harmon, of Stuart, VA, received her Professional Crafts: Fiber AAS from Haywood Community College (Clyde, NC) in 2024. She serves as the Program Director for the Gypsy Hollingsworth Fiber Arts Program, a division of Stokes County Arts Council in Danbury, NC. Janeise teaches introductory fiber arts classes in Stokes County and demonstrates her craft at seasonal events. She is a member of the Homestead Weavers Exchange in Critz, VA and has exhibited artworks regionally in Stuart, Martinsville, and Roanoke. Janeise shared, as her artist statement, “I am a handweaver living in Southwest Virginia making artworks that celebrate the material culture of Appalachia. The historical overshot patterns handwoven by this region’s foremothers are the inspiration for my work. Ever the enthusiast for bold design, I am particularly taken with the sweeping curves and geometric patterns that this weave structure is known for. In presenting these graphic designs as art, I seek to start conversations and share stories about these remarkable homestead weavers and the processes they undertook to create warmth and beauty on their isolated homesteads.” This exhibit will be on display through June 30, 2026, in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, Saturday, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, and Sunday 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm. For additional information about the exhibit, please contact the Stokes County Arts Council at (336) 593-8159.

People Incorporated Receives $300,000 To Support Women-Owned Businesses

Normally occurs in June

People Incorporated Financial Services has been awarded $300,000 through the Commonwealth’s Capital for Communities Fund (CCCF) to support and empower women entrepreneurs with accessible financial products and coaching. Funding will also support existing business lending and technical assistance across the agency’s 16 city and county service area. “This funding allows us to expand access to much-needed capital to historically underserved populations, including women-owned businesses and low-income community members,” said People Incorporated Director of Community Economic Development Stephanie Lillard. “Women entrepreneurs continue to face barriers to capital needed to grow or start their businesses, and we hope this funding will help break down walls and support the start-up and expansion of women-owned businesses across the commonwealth.” The Federal Reserve’s 2022 Small Business Credit Survey showed that women-owned businesses frequently encounter barriers to obtaining capital to support and grow their businesses. People Incorporated established People Incorporated Financial Services in 2000 to meet the financing needs of disadvantaged individuals and entrepreneurs in Southwest Virginia and has since expanded to serve the Northern Piedmont, Northern Shenandoah Valley and Greater Prince William regions with its loan products and financial services. People Incorporated is proud to be the only Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) headquartered in Southwest Virginia. Normally occurs in July

Normally occurs in August

People Incorporated Receives $300,000 To Support Women-Owned Businesses

Normally occurs in September

Visit our website to learn more about our business loans and financial services or give us a call at 276-619-2297!

Janeise teaches introductory fiber arts classes in Stokes County and demonstrates her craft at seasonal events. She is a member of the Homestead Weavers Exchange in Critz, VA and has exhibited artworks regionally in Stuart, Martinsville and Roanoke. Janeise shared, as her artist statement, “I am a handweaver living in Southwest Virginia making artworks that celebrate the material culture of Appalachia. The historical overshot patterns handwoven by this region's foremothers are the inspiration for my work. Ever the enthusiast for bold design, I am particularly taken with the sweeping curves and geometric patterns that this weave structure is known for. In presenting these graphic designs as art, I seek to start conversations and share stories about these remarkable homestead weavers and the processes they undertook to create warmth and beauty on their isolated homesteads.”  This exhibit will be on display through June 30, 2026 in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm, Saturday, 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m. and Sunday 12:00pm-6:00pm. For additional information about the exhibit, please contact the Stokes County Arts Council at (336) 593-8159 or visit www.stokesarts.org.
