Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith said a lower crime rate, fewer break-ins and a decrease in the number of larcenies show that he and his officers are serving residents’ needs and addressing concerns.
Smith, 39, a former Martinsville police officer, was elected to his first term as sheriff in 2007.
He is being challenged this year by Don Richards, a former corrections and school resource officer.
Smith said serving residents is a trademark of his office, and correlating data show numerous accomplishments.
For instance, over 2008, 2009 and 2010, Smith said the county’s crime rate fell 21 percent.
