Smith, 39, a former Martinsville police officer, was elected to his first term as sheriff in 2007. He is being challenged this year by Don Richards, a former corrections and school resource officer. Smith said serving residents is a trademark of his office, and correlating data show numerous accomplishments. For instance, over 2008, 2009 and 2010, Smith said the county’s crime rate fell 21 percent.
