October 2, 2011
On October 1, 2011, Laurel Hill in Ararat, VA (Patrick County) was a busy hive of activity at the 21st Annual Encampment and Living History. Civil War Generals were a major attraction
The following impersonators showed up and shared their Civil War history with spectators:
Gen. Robert E. Lee
Gen. James Longstreet
Gen. Stonewall Jackson, and
Gen. J. E. B. Stuart
Also the Battle Scenes were a major attraction too. With lots of cannon fire, horse soldiers and foot soldiers. Laurel Hill is an ideal site for this kind of reenactment.
Sutler merchants and period food was also popular. Indian fry bread, rootbeer and sasafras drinks in antique bottles, Southern Barbeque, tradional fried apple pies (moon pies), local apple cider from a Patrick County Orchard (Windy Hill), hamburgers, pinto beans, biscuits and sausauge and much more.
