Tuesday, August 23, 2011 By DEBBIE HALL - Bulletin Staff Writer Fire and law enforcement personnel faced hazardous conditions Friday night as they worked to rescue a teenager who had fallen into a ravine in Vesta. Steve Allen, coordinator of emergency services in Patrick County; Patrick County Deputy Dan Gray; and Meadows of Dan Volunteer Fire Department Chief Carlton Largen and Assistant Fire Chief Ronald Terry, as well as others, took part. The men worked to rescue a 17-year-old Virginia Beach teen who was vacationing in the Vesta area with his family and apparently went to explore areas near the family’s rental cabin, Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith has said. The sheriff’s office has not released the name of the teenager, who died Sunday at Wake Forest University Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, N.C. However, The Virginian Pilot newspaper in Norfolk identified him as Eric Sorg, a senior at First Colonial High School in Virginia Beach. The teen’s family notified authorities at 8:53 p.m. Friday, after he failed to return to the cabin, the sheriff has said.
