(WGHP)— The Meadows of Dan Volunteer Fire Department, with the assistance of multiple agencies, battled a fire at the Meadows of Dan Elementary School, located at 3003 Jeb Stuart Highway Meadows of Dan, Virginia. Steve Allen, the manager of Patrick County Emergency Service, said that 54 firefighters from 17 different departments responded to the fire. Allen said the Meadows of Dan Volunteer Fire Department was the first to respond when they got the call at 3:46 a.m. Saturday. They arrived on the scene at 4:01 a.m. The fire originated in a second story classroom, but the cause is unknown at this time. According to Patrick County Public Schools, the school year started on Thursday and Meadows of Dan Elementary has 115 students in Pre-Kindergarten through the 7th grade. Superintendent Roger Morris met with Patrick County Public Schools board members, teachers and the P.T.A at 9 a.m. to decide what to do with the displaced students, who will not be able to return to school until Tuesday. Morris discussed holding classes in the school's new gymnasium, which is a separate undamaged building, but no plans have been finalized. Meadows of Dan teachers have reached out to faculty in neighboring school systems for help with supplies. An emergency meeting of the Patrick County School Board has been called for 2 p.m. Saturday to discuss plans for the remainder of the school year. Meadows of Dan firefighters were assisted by the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department, the Stuart Fire Department, the Floyd Fire Department, the Cana Volunteer Fire Department, the Galax Fire Department, the Laurel Fork Fire Department, and the Carroll County Fire Depart.
