April 28, 2011
Eight people killed by tornadoes in Halifax County, Virginia and Washington County, Virginia due to storms there on April 27, 2011. Virginia Governor declares a state of emergency.

Governor McDonnell Declares State of Emergency for Severe Weather Eight Killed by Possible Tornadoes RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell has declared a state of emergency in response to severe weather that affected the commonwealth yesterday and this morning. This action authorizes state agencies to assist local governments in responding to the impact of possible tornadoes. A state of emergency is declared so that state resources can be made available. The Governor’s emergency declaration insures a fully coordinated state response to support local initial recovery efforts. A declaration also decreases time and paperwork needed to get personnel, equipment and supplies on scene. Severe storms that spawned possible tornadoes struck several areas including the counties of Goochland, Halifax, Shenandoah and Washington among others. Seven fatalities in Washington County and one in Halifax County have been confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. State agencies are assisting by: • The Virginia Emergency Operations Center is coordinating the state’s response with increased staffing. • Regional emergency coordinators with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management are on scene working with local responders and emergency managers. • Virginia State Police are assisting with traffic control and security. • Chainsaw crews from the Virginia Department of Forestry are assisting with debris removal. • Virginia Department of Transportation crews are clearing debris and ensuring roads are safe for travel. • Virginia Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster are assisting with chainsaw crews.
